Dr. Thomas C. Hsu is a nationally recognized innovator in science and math education, and founder of CPO Science (Cambridge Physics Outlet, Inc.) A nationally recognized workshop leader and presenter, Tom has personally worked with more than 15,000 K-12 teachers and administrators since 1991. He has taught at all levels including elementary, middle, and high school, as well as college and graduate school, including nomination for the 1990 Goodwin medal for excellence in teaching at MIT.
Tom's own classroom experience and deep physics and engineering background give him the ability to make difficult concepts clear and relevant to teachers. Among physics teachers, Tom is best known for the rugged hands-on teaching equipment he created such as: the Rollercoaster, Gears and the Atom Building Game.
In 2002, Tom and the CPO Science team published the first two textbooks in a whole new series designed to teach high school physics and chemistry through hands-on methods. These programs are unique in that they are true inquiry-based learning systems that include equipment packages free with the purchase of textbooks. Text, lab manuals, teacher support and hands-on equipment are all designed to work together.
Tom has been an active participant in many education organizations and continues to represent CPO Science at meetings, conventions and through his science presentations.
Tom holds a PhD in applied plasma physics from MIT and a bachelor of science with honors, (magna-cum laude) from the State University of New York at Stony Brook where he studied both physics and mechanical engineering. Tom did his doctoral research on the Alcator C-MOD Tokamak fusion reactor at MIT and developed the worlds fastest, high-sensitivity spectrometers for millimeter wave diagnostics used in fusion. Prior to starting CPO Science, Tom worked as an engineer in the development of the first generation of color copiers for Xerox and DuPont. He also worked in product development and process engineering for the Eastman Kodak Company. Tom is currently writing a new book and is the president of the Concord Teaching Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the preparation of science teachers.
Author- Tom is the author of the following CPO Science learning systems: Foundations of Physical Science, Foundations of Physical Science with Earth and Space Science and Foundations of Physics . He is currently working on Physics- A First Course .
Inventor- He is the Inventor of CPO Science equipment
National Speaker/Presenter- Workshop, keynote speaker and trainer
