Staff Development

Program Overview for Administrators and/or Parents: 1 - 2 hours

CPO Science provides hands-on presentations for administrators and parents who would like to know more about our inquiry-based teaching and learning systems. Because our science programs are taught through investigation, it is extremely useful and helpful for administrators, teachers, and parents to experience our methods and materials firsthand.

Implementation Workshop: 3 - 6 hours

Meant to serve districts who adopt our teaching and learning systems, this workshop prepares teachers to implement our program. Participants engage in hands-on investigations, and focus on pedagogy, content, lab safety, materials management, and use of all program components, including equipment, curriculum, and technology. Contact your regional sales manager to schedule implementation workshops well in advance. Sessions work best when offered the summer before the first year of program implementation.

Awareness Workshop: 3 - 6 hours

These hands-on awareness workshops provide an overview of CPO Science Learning Systems and supplemental materials. These are typically a regional opportunity for teachers and administrators from many area districts to come together for staff development. The agenda and topics are completely customizable. Graduate credit is available (project work in addition to the contact hours is required).

In-service Content Institute: 5 - 10 hours

CPO Science offers a wide range of content workshops that can be combined and customized to meet the needs of particular local education agencies. While it is possible and often times necessary to provide only one or two days of science content development, we recommend combining several mini-courses and offering them at appointed times throughout the school year, as well as having teachers attend a regional summer institute. Graduate credit is available.

Regional Summer Content Institute: 35 hours

Join us for an intensive five day hands-on science content institute on an oceanfront campus in Massachusetts, or at one of several other regional locations. This course is in its fifth year, and has met with rave reviews from teachers all across the country. Each day features several different science topics,
and all content is presented through inquiry-based investigation. Work in groups of 4 or 5 to perform the investigations. This institute is FUN, practical, and content intensive. Three graduate credits are available through Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts.

Staff Development/Equipment Packages - Free Equipment!

CPO Science is dedicated to providing teachers with not only the inquiry-based science content they need to promote student learning, but also the equipment and curriculum necessary for strong science content development. Any of our in-service content institutes or regional summer institutes can be customized to include placing high-quality curriculum and equipment in science classrooms. Please contact your regional sales manager for pricing and for help with designing a customized staff development/equipment package.

Any of our science content courses can be customized to integrate specific components of ESL/ELL instruction. CPO Science instructors have been trained in practices that promote science learning for ALL students, including those with special challenges. The use of modeling, hands-on activities, using real objects, visual aids, demonstrations, concept maps, graphic organizers, bulletin boards, and “word walls” are just some of the approaches we can offer within the framework of our science content institutes.
